چکیده

We argue that the coordination of the activities of individual complex agents enables a system to develop and sustain complexity at a higher level. We exemplify relevant mechanisms through computer simulations of a toy system, a coupled map lattice with transmission delays. The coordination here is achieved through the synchronization of the chaotic operations of the individual elements, and on the basis of this, regular behavior at a longer temporal scale emerges that is inaccessible to the uncoupled individual dynamics. The purpose of this article is to challenge the view, often expressed and perhaps prevalent in most discussions, that the essence of complex systems lies in the emergence of complex structures from the non-linear interaction of many simple elements that obey simple rules. Typically, these rules consist only of 0-1 alternatives selected in response to the input received, as in many prototypes like cellular automata, Boolean networks, spin systems, etc. We do not intend to deny that quite intricate patterns and structures can occur in such systems. However, these are toy systems, and the systems occurring in reality rather consist of elements that individually are quite complex themselves. This brings Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Inselstr.22-26, 04103 Leipzig, Germany, {fatay, jost}@mis.mpg.de Santa Fe Institute, 1399 Hyde Park Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501, USA, [email protected] Throughout this essay, we employ the term “complex” only in some vague and metaphorical manner, without any attempt at quantifying it. This should not obscure the general thesis presented here.

Modeling of Pressure Dependence of Interfacial Tension Behaviors of Supercritical CO2 + Crude Oil Systems Using a Basic Parachor Expression

Parachor based expressions (basic and mechanistic) are often used to model the experimentally observed pressure dependence of interfacial tension (IFT) behaviors of complex supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) and crude oil mixtures at elevated temperatures. However, such modeling requires various input data (e.g. compositions and densities of the equilibrium liquid and vapor phases, and molec...

Extensions of ELECTRE-I and TOPSIS methods for group decision-making under complex Pythagorean fuzzy environment

Multi-criteria group decision-making is a process in which decision makers assess the performance of alternatives on the basis of conflicting criteria to opt the most worthy alternative as solution. TOPSIS and ELECTRE are effective and commonly used methods to solve multiple criteria decision-making problems. The aim of this study is to propose two new models, namely, complex Pythagorean fuzzy ...

An Enhanced Finite Element method for Two Dimensional Linear Viscoelasticity using Complex Fourier Elements

In this paper, the finite element analysis of two-dimensional linear viscoelastic problems is performed using quadrilateral complex Fourier elements and, the results are compared with those obtained by quadrilateral classic Lagrange elements. Complex Fourier shape functions contain a shape parameter which is a constant unknown parameter adopted to enhance approximation’s accuracy. Since the iso...

New Evidence of the Emergence of Complex Societies Discovered on the Central Iranian Plateau

The archaeological mound of Sofalin south of the Alborz Mountains of Northern Iran (Eastern Rey plain) sheds considerablelight on at least four problems connected with the emergence of complex societies in this part of Iran. The first, it helpsfill a chronological gap in an important archaeological sequence by revealing a previously unidentified late fourth andthird millennium B.C. sequence of ...
